I think it’s important to keep in mind how much anime is a storng part of japanese culture. This isn’t to say that everyone in Japan watches anime, but anime is a more popular avenue especially for adaptation. Whenever a manga gets hella popular, it becomes an anime over night. There’s also an anime I haven’t seen yet that chronicles the story of a transexual boy. But we only get the animation here that’s meant for children because the American mentality of what’s appropriate for kids is warped. My friend and I have discussed frequently about how the ratings here are different there; children can read stuff that we mark as teenage only in Japan. That being said, Americans have a weird relationship with media. That’s why shows like South Park, The Simpsons, Family Guy etc, are so interesting because people look at it and think it’s for kids because it’s a cartoon when it’s so blatantly is not. I was so incensed when I saw adults taking their kids to see The Simpsons movie because it’s a show for adults (you’d think people would know this about a show that’s been on for over 20 years). We also don’t have a child-friendly culture. Unless it’s the brain-dead stuff like what’s on Disney and Cartoon Network (though it used to be much better in the 90s), most stuff is made for adults because adults are the ones who pay for the movie tickets. Like Tangled for example, a movie I thoroughly enjoyed, but I certainly don’t consider myself brain-dead and I have incredibly high standards when it comes to cinema. Tangled was amazing, and I wouldn’t say it was for kids other than the physical violence. Children are stupid at least here in the States so the stuff made for kids normally includes people falling down, or hitting each other. Children do not understand sarcasm, adult situations, etc. That’s why stuff for kids is impressively mindless and bland. The only reason Shrek did so well was because it was able to combine some stuff for both kids and adults. But I would say that PIXAR isn’t for children because their plots tend to be much deeper and characters more complex than a child could understand. The American relationship with cartooning/animation is a poorly developed one. I wrote a paper about the emergence of animation among Hollywood (ie: The Gotham Knight animated shorts and the Animatrix). Personally, seeing animated movies make me want to create movies more than live action because it’s limitless and I prefer 2-D animation over 3-D. But I think my relationship with watching anime with darker tones has helped shape my opinion.
